Torero Town
Terms of Service
1. Who we are
Torero Town is an independent student project by Ryan Morris and Calem Filipek, two students at the University of San Diego. Torero Town is not incorporated yet. In these terms, "we" means Ryan and Calem, and "you" means the person using Torero Town.
Torero Town is not run or endorsed by the University of San Diego (USD) or by Instructure.
These terms cover the Torero Town app for Mac and Windows and this website. When you tick "I agree" in the app or on this website, or use Torero Town, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy.
2. Who can use Torero Town
- You must be 18 or older.
- You must be a USD student with a @sandiego.edu email and an account on USD's Canvas.
- You may connect only your own Canvas account.
3. This is a beta
Torero Town is early software. It changes often, it has bugs, and it may sometimes be unavailable. We fix problems as fast as we can, but we can't promise it will always work.
4. Reminders are best-effort
Torero Town tries to find every deadline in your courses and remind you before each one. It can still get things wrong. It can miss a deadline, show the wrong date or time, or remind you late or not at all. For example, that can happen when your computer is off or asleep, when the app isn't running, when Canvas or an email service is down, or when an instructor posts a date somewhere the app can't read.
You are responsible for your own deadlines. Keep checking Canvas, your syllabus and what your instructors tell you. Torero Town does not replace them. We are not responsible for missed deadlines, late work, lost points or grades.
5. Text reminders
Torero Town text reminders are recurring automated text messages about your Canvas deadlines. They are optional: texts aren't required to use Torero Town, and everything else works without them.
- Opting in. Turn them on under Text message in the app's Settings, or tick "Opt in to text reminders" and type your mobile number when you sign up on torerotown.com, on a computer or a phone. We text a 6-digit code first to confirm the number, and send no reminders until it is confirmed. Texts work with US and Canadian mobile numbers.
- How often. Message frequency varies: about one text per assignment, from a few hours to a week before it is due, at most 3 a day, only between 9 AM and 8:30 PM your time, plus a short check-in about once a month while texts are on.
- Cost. Msg & data rates may apply. We don't charge for texts.
- Replies. Reply STOP to stop: we send one text saying texts are off, and nothing more. To start again, reply START, then turn texts back on in the app. Reply HELP for help, or email help@torerotown.com. Reply DONE to a reminder once the work is in, including work Canvas can't see, such as work on paper.
- Delivery. Texts are best-effort, like every reminder (section 4). Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.
- Your number. Use a number that is yours. If you change or give up your number, turn texts off first or reply STOP. The Privacy Policy says what we keep for texts and for how long. No mobile information is shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes.
6. How you get access
- Your school pays. Torero Town is licensed to universities. While your school has an agreement with us, every student with a school email (at USD, a @sandiego.edu email) can use Torero Town. You don't subscribe or pay us anything.
- Signing in. Signing in with your school's Canvas account gives your computer a license that renews on its own while you stay signed in. If your school's agreement ends, the license stops renewing and runs out within 30 days.
- One Canvas account. A license covers one Canvas account. You can install Torero Town on more than one of your own computers.
- Beta subscriptions. Subscriptions from the beta, all made free with pilot codes, have ended. No one was charged and no one will be.
7. Your Canvas account
You allow Torero Town to read your Canvas account for you, as described in the Privacy Policy. It only reads; it never posts, submits, changes or deletes anything in Canvas. You remain responsible for your Canvas account and for following USD's rules for Canvas and its computer systems. Keep your Canvas sign-in and your computer secure.
8. Usage data
Usage data is part of using Torero Town, the same for every student: you agree to it on the app's "Before you start" screen, and nothing is sent until you do. It is what the app finds and how it works for you, including the names of your classes and of the items it finds, and diagnostics; never your name, email, grades or scores, what you turned in, or anything you wrote. The Privacy Policy lists exactly what is sent and how long we keep it. We use it to run and improve Torero Town, including learning which Canvas items are really due, and to report how well it works, for example to universities, only as totals that don't identify you. If you don't want usage data sent, don't use Torero Town. (Until October 20, 2026, usage data was optional.)
9. Acceptable use
Don't:
- use someone else's Canvas account or Torero Town license, or let someone else use yours;
- share, sell or resell your access;
- try to get around the license check, or probe, overload or attack our server, Canvas, or any service Torero Town uses;
- use Torero Town to break the law, USD's academic integrity rules, or USD's rules for its computer systems.
10. Our software, and other people's names
Torero Town's code and design belong to us. While you follow these terms, we give you a personal, non-transferable right to use the app. USD, Toreros, Canvas, Simple Syllabus and other names belong to their owners. We use them only to say what Torero Town works with, and that doesn't mean they endorse us.
11. Feedback and quotes
If you send us ideas or bug reports, we may use them to improve Torero Town without owing you anything. We will never quote you publicly by name, or in a way that identifies you, without your written permission.
12. Ending
You can stop any time: disconnect Canvas in Settings, uninstall the app, and delete its data folder (the Privacy Policy says where it is). We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms. If we shut Torero Town down, we will email you first.
13. No warranty
To the extent the law allows, Torero Town is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, including that it will find every deadline, be accurate, or be available without interruption.
14. Limits on our liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, including missed deadlines, late work, lost points or grades, or lost data. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or $10. Some places don't allow these limits; where that's the case, they apply only as far as the law allows.
15. Changes to these terms
Every version has a number and a date at the top. When we change these terms, we publish the new version here first, and the app asks you to agree again before you keep using it. If you don't agree to a new version, stop using Torero Town. Ask us for any earlier version.
16. Governing law and disputes
California law governs these terms. If something goes wrong, email us first and we will try to fix it. Any dispute that can't be settled that way goes to the state or federal courts in San Diego County, California.
17. The rest
These terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Torero Town. If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we form a company to run Torero Town, these terms and your access move to that company, and we will tell you.
